Fun Photoshoot for the Cover of My Book

Just this week, on Friday, I had a fun photoshoot for the cover of my book which is going to be called Get Rid Of Your “If Only” and Start Creating Success YOu Desire!

My friend and a great photographer Ken Jacobs www.kenjacobsphotography.com took the images.

I drove about 46 miles to Ken’s studio. I brought all my make-up, shoes etc….. but… I forgot my clothing ……

Thankfully, Ken is a good friend and a very flexible person, so he kindly agreed to wait for me while I drove 46 miles back hoe and another 46 miles back to his studio :-) Agh! Women! How can someone forget the most important thing in such situation! Of course, I blame my husband for this: he’s too cool and I love him too much, which distracts my mind :-)

Anyway, I wanted to share with you some of my pics. Enjoy and let me know what you think!

How to be Happy and Healthy (published at GCA Magazine article)

“Life consists of health, wealth, and relationships. They’re all interconnected: neglect one, the others are impacted”. Sean Stephenson

Does something always get in the way of achieving your most desired goals? Do you wish you were healthier, more active with your children, and could accomplish more at work? Do you look at successful people who seem to live their best year EVERY YEAR and whose lives always go in the right direction, and you ask yourself “How do they do it all?” On the other hand, do you know some very smart people with high IQ who just can’t do well in life, have major health problems and perhaps are lonely? While IQ can, to some degree, predict academic performance and success in obtaining a job, some of those with high IQ scores often can’t keep that very job, fail to maintaing strong relationships with people, and are unable to stick with positive habits.

You ask “Why?”

The answer is Emotional Intelligence (EQ/EI). It is your ability to recognize what emotions you experience and how this emotions affect your behaviors and actions, so that you can consciously take control over those rather than letting them control you and your decisions. Once you learn this concept and tools, you can be in charge forever! It will increase your self-awareness and enable you to get rid of bad habits that destroy your life, relationships and health, and create new, positive habits that you will develop thoughtfully, which will allow you to live the life you deserve, achieve the goals you desire, improve your health, increase your motivation and productivity, and enhance your overall well-being.

Emotional Intelligence is built of 5 components. Each of them consists 3 subcomponents. You can learn more about all of them by visiting www.EQforSuccess.com. In this article, we will only talk about EQ skills needed to improve your health and wellness. This article has been published in GA Chiropractic Association Magazine. To read it there, click here.

Emotional Self-Awareness – the ability to understand how you feel and why and apply this understanding to avoid unwanted behaviors and actions. For example, you feel grumpy and exhausted with the fact that it’s been raining for the last 6 days. Because of that, you’re short with your family and aggravated with your colleagues. I need to tell you that between what happens to us and what we do with it lies the power of our choice. Ask yourself “Can I do anything to stop the rain?” Obviously, the answer is “No”. Then, why be grumpy? Without putting too much thought in why you’re grumpy, you can stay that way and get exhausted and overwhelmed, and overwhelm others, too. But by taking charge of your mood, realizing how you really feel and why, you can choose to focus on what’s really important in life and what you have control over. The first approach is called “reactive” and the second is called “proactive”. By becoming proactive and exercising your power of choice, you will increase your optimism and save yourself from unnecessary stress, focus your effort and energy on getting things done and improving your productivity overall. To increase your self-awareness, keep a journal and spend some time each evening to write down the feelings you experienced that day and why you felt like this, as well as how it affected what you did. Another recommendation: whenever you experience anger or other strong emotions like excitement, slow down to examine the reason why you’re feeling that way; here, try to “go to the balcony” which means imagine yourself not being yourself but someone who’s watching you that very moment: what does this person think? how would this person act? what advice could this person give you? When doing it becomes a habit, you will become more calm under pressure.

Self-Regard – the ability to accept yourself the way you are and to respect yourself. Often, I hear from people that they do not deserve a beautiful body or good health. Self-Regard is usually associated with the feeling of security, inner strength, self-assuredness, and self-confidence. People with healthy Self-Regard know their strengths and appreciate them while accepting their vulnerabilities and successfully managing them. Confidence is essential for success because every positive transformation starts with the belief that you can make good things happen for yourself and others. To increase your confidence, tell yourself every morning a simple phrase “I Love Myself!” As you do it, look in a mirror and feel encouragement. Also, write down your achievements and good things you do for others. As you list them, you will remember so many new strengths of yours that you may have forgotten with time. Besides that, you can ask a trusted friend or a partner what it is that they value most in you. You may be surprised how many great personal qualities you possess!

Independence – the ability to function autonomously, direct and control yourself. Sometimes, people make a decision to get healthier, but when their friends ask them out to a fast-food place, they can’t resist, even though they know it will delay the achievement of their own desired health-goal. Making decisions, following through and keeping commitments to own self is what stands out about independent people. To increase your independence, set up SMART goals for yourself: Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic and Time-bound. For example: “I will lose 10 pounds by May 15 (Measurable, Realistic and Time-bound). To do so, I will wake up at 6 am instead of 7 am, exercise for 45 min and then eat healthy, home-made breakfast instead of grabbing something from a drive-through; I will also take my own healthy sandwiches to work and eat lunch slowly, so that my body gets filled with less food; I will replace sodas with green tea and water; I also will go for a walk every day after work for 15 min around the neighborhood instead of watching TV; and I will put my cellphone on “silent” at night time, so I can get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep to let my body and mind fully recharge (Specific: explains how to)”. After setting your goal, print it out on a bright-color paper and place it where you will effortlessly see it every day. When a friend invites you out to a fast-food place, take a look at your goal and act accordingly.

Impulse Control – the ability to resist or delay an impulse in order to avoid making rush decisions. People with healthy Impulse Control are willing to defer immediate results for long-term success. For example, you set your goal of losing weight and know that you are not supposed to eat heavily after 6 pm. But let’s assume you get angry at somebody of frustrated for some reason, and the first thing you do is rush to the refrigerator and grab something to eat, or, even worse, go to a fast-food place and drink 4 beers to calm yourself down. Impulse Control is essential for success at anything you want to succeed at, including your health and wellness. It enables you to take a moment and use the power of your own choice to make the right decision that will contribute to achieving and not delaying your goal.

Stress tolerance – the ability to effectively cope with stress. Even more important here is resiliency – the ability to overcome adverse life events without experiencing stress, and to grow and develop as a consequence of such events. Did you know that 52% of people miss 1 to 2 days of work per year due to stress, 30% miss 3 to 6 days of work per year due to stress, and 18% miss more than 6 days of work per year due to stress. How much do you make a day? This is how much more you could have made if you were more resilient. Stress and heart disease go hand-in-hand: if you often experience stress, your body produces a high level of cortisol (stress hormone) which can lead to rapid heartbeat and high blood pressure, a potentially deadly combination. Also, recently numerous studies have been performed elucidating the role of emotional stress as a risk-factor for the development of type two diabetes. Here’s what you can do right now to increase your resiliency and improve your stress-tolerance.

Find a good chiropractor. Chiropractors identify and correct the cause of health challenges which arise when misalignments of the vertebrae (the small bones that make up the spine) disrupt neurological communications between your brain and the cells, tissues, and organs of the body. These misalignments can cause you a great deal of pain which will increase your stress-level. Make a chiropractic adjustment a part of your routine and you will feel more harmony in your body and mind.

Spend quality time with your loved ones. Building stronger family boundaries will help decrease your level of stress and increase the level of empathy, love and support. Establish “Family Dinner Friday” when everyone will prepare and eat a healthy meal at a table while sharing a conversation. No TV or cell phones allowed!

Fuel your mind with positive, uplifting information. Every day we’re bombarded with scary, ugly, scandalous and tragic news. Instead of listening to the radio on the way to work, listen to a motivational CD about personal development, leadership, and success. Instead of talking about the economic crisis at a doctor’s office, search Facebook for positive and motivational quotes and wallpapers. You can also start a “Thanksgiving Journal” where you will write down thanks for all the good things people do for you daily (it may be a word of support or an act of kindness). You will see how much easier it will become for you to keep cool under pressure if you consciously avoid negativity and look for positivity. Also remember that we’re constantly engaging in a self-talk which tells us and others a lot about how we perceive the world. Those who have a positive and realistic self-talk function in much more healthy ways than those whose self-talk is negative. Changing just the way you talk to yourself is a giant step in the direction to preventative care for being overwhelmed with stress.

Exercise. Exercise can decrease stress, increase flexibility and balance, improve blood sugar and blood pressure control, strengthen your body overall and increase your level of optimism toward life. Good exercise program consists of cardio, stretch, and weight training. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise (brisk walking or cycling) weekly plus strength training at least twice a week. Make sure to eat right when you include working out in your routine. Keep a food journal to avoid poor eating. Protein will fuel your workouts and help you maintain lean muscle. Make sure to eat at least 3-4 servings of 2-3 ounces of protein-reach beans, soy, fish, lean meat or low-fat dairy products. If you don’t feel motivated enough, find an accountability partner. A reliable accountability partner can provide foundation that will support you along your journey to creating permanent positive lifestyle change for wellness and success.

Eat healthy. Everyday stress can cause metabolic changes that, in the long run, contribute to obesity, according to a recent study by the departments of psychiatry and biomedical engineering at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. In the same time, healthy eating habits can prevent you from experiencing stress. Research indicates that 41% of obese people cite “not enough time” as the reason they eat poorly. You can spend just two hours on a weekend to shop for week’s worth healthy food and prepare healthy meals, and it will save you time, pounds, and money. A survey by CDC found that almost 40% of people, who lost a significant amount of weight and kept it off successfully, planned their weekly meals in advance. Don’t underestimate the importance of breakfast. Skipping breakfast is strongly linked to the development of obesity. Breakfast skippers tend to eat more food than usual at the next meal or nibble on high-calorie snacks to stave off hunger. It’s important that you consume antioxidants – nature’s way of fighting off potentially dangerous molecules in the body. Make it a rule to “Eat It If It Grows On A Tree” (fruits and vegetables). Essentially eat spinach and other greens: they provide you with vitamins A, C, K, as well as minerals including calcium and magnesium and also fiber and beta-carotene. Greens can help you prevent cancer, heart-disease, stroke and obesity.

I hope that you will pick a few things from the list above that you can start doing immediately to significantly increase your resiliency and help you prevent stress. By utilizing the tools I shared with you, you can advance your Emotional Intelligence, relationships, health, motivation, productivity, effectiveness and happiness.

BevAnn Bonds and The High Achiever Radio

On the 9th of May I was interviewed by BevAnn Bonds on the High Achiever Radio. It was such an amazing experience and a unique opportunity to share my knowledge, experience and tips with many business people in Atlanta.

BevAnn is an extremely nice person. I also met Andy who is the producer of this radio-show.

We talked about Emotional Intelligence, why it’s important for organizations and individuals, how it’s being used for hiring high-potential talent and developing human capital, and also how the principles of EQ are used in our daily life, especially with our children to help them become successful.

They also define a high achiever in a very unique way.

We define High Achievers are those individuals that have attained a level of excellence and success in life, in at least 3 of the 5 pillars of success: Business, well-being (physical and mental), relationships, wealth, and contribution. In what areas do you feel that you have attained success and how?

Here’s about me using their definition:

Business. Started in July last year, today Anna has already been published in a magazine, had very interesting speaking engagements, her workshops are always full and people even are ready to drive to Savannah to hear her. She has grown her online-community and became an inspiration to many people around the world.

Well-Being. Through positive daily habits that Anna developed when she was 15, she was able to stay healthy and energized through some difficult times in her life. Even though she had lived in a battered women shelter, Anna never experienced a depression, and her friends call her a holiday-girl as she is always on god mood and ready to uplift others. Her strong belief in mind-power and self-leadership help her remain positive and optimistic no matter what. Anna has been a size 0 all her adult life and cooks for herself and her family healthy meals daily. Of course, she exercises and stays very active to keep up with her eventful life.

Relationships. Anna is happily married which she considers not just a mere luck, but actually a result of mutual efforts of her and her husband’s efforts to be happy. However, the most important relationship for her is that with herself. Supporting, loving, encouraging and motivating own self Anna considers a must for anyone who wants to have good relationships with others.

Wealth and Contribution. Anna does not actually separate the two because wealthy, in her opinion, represents how many people you’ve helped in your life. Anna believes in purpose in life and has a high level of social responsibility, which she fulfills by making a positive, long-lasting difference in the lives of abused women and children who live in a safe-house of Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence (official Dekalb Co safe-house). Anna has been their volunteer since early 2010 when she taught herself English after 1 year of self-studying. A domestic violence survivor herself, Anna lived in a shelter for victims of abuse in 2009 as well. She also mentors people who reach out to her for help and addresses some of the social issues of modern society in her blog.

Networking Works at the Buckhead Club: seven men and me.

Are you a woman? How would you imagine yourself walking into a room of 7 men to network with??????? What? No-o-o-o-ooo! The first thing in my mind was “I wanna go home!” :-)

No worries. At the Buckhead Club in Atlanta there’s alway a facilitator at a Member Connect event to make you feel very comfortable. So….. I AM walking into a room with 7 men and here’s what I’ve learned.

Please meet David Schultz, JD  - the Vice President of Wealth Management, LLC.  Investment advisement. Corporate retirement plans. Attorney by education, Rick comes across as  a very genuine person, very authentic, nice and kind. He holds himself in a professional manner and is also a good speaker. Want to find out more about the man? Check out his website www.hawwealth.com

Please also meet Rick Lackey, a native atlantan who truly believes in the concept of Collaboration vs Competition (loved it!!!!!). FYI: out of 8 of us, he was the only one who comes from his mother :-) everyone else comes from somewhere else :-) (I come from Russia, for example – lol) Anyway, if you’re looking for accountable and measurable network, he’s the TO-Go-TO-Guy. Meetings held at professional service firms and help match you with your ideal client. Are you intrigued? Take a look at Rick’s website! www.realprosnet.com

Next, please meet Richard Turner - broker at Walden Business Inc. His father was in military, so as a child he got to travel a lot. He is now a good friend of mine as I see him at other 5,000 000 networking events I usually go to :-) BTW, do you know what that tells you when people network everywhere every day? That tells you they care for their brand, image, reputation, etc and that  you can trust them. Learn more about my friend Richard at www.waldenbus.com

Now please meet Jason Peacock – an insurance broker who provides you with property insurance, liability insurance, workers’ insurance, executive protection etc. He’s originally from Chicago (doesn’t sound like it :-) He really has a different accent than my friend Connie Catalano who’s from Chicago as well). Jason lived in different places. He’s a golfer. Married to a “Michigan girl” :-) (loved how he said it!!!! BTW, he said his wife “had a better idea for his career” which he followed). What’s unique about him is that he recently wrote a book “The New Guy”. He comes across as a very purposeful person. BTW, he’s a hero-father :-) Yes, a hero! That means, if he were in Russia, he’d be paid by the Government for making and HAVING so many kids :-) You should check Jason out at www.ioausa.com.

Ok, Next! John McGarvey. He does Insurance. Works with Jason. A very young and accomplished man. He’s a hero-father as well!!!!!! Originally, he’s from Pennsylvania. Check John out at www.ioausa.com

Now, Mark Brown. I originally met him at the previous networking event at the Buckhead Club. He is a Consultant with 25+ years of experience!!!!!!! He works on design of customers’ experience and business architecture. He’s from Michigan. Followed his wife choosing a place to live – Atlanta (what?????? women are powerful, aren’t they? lol) Mark’s website is www.thinkgreenhat.com

Now is the most exciting part!!! Who was the facilitator, you ask me? Robert (Bob) Hill. I met him at 5,000,000,000 other networking events before and must say he’s a very nice guy. Moved to Atlanta in 1975.  Grew up in Alabama, but never been back. Does not want to move anywhere else. His son lives 3,5 miles away and the daughter 1 mile away. And that was his dream – to never pick up and go anywhere for Christmas or Thanksgiving. Very cool!!!! He’s involved with commercial real estate. Check out all the details at www.hillcorporatepartners.com

To help us tell our stories, Bob asked the following questions:

  • Tell us about your business.
  • What brought you to Atlanta?
  • What are some trends you see in your industry?

It was a very interesting evening. Rick Lackey and I stayed and talked, which I appreciated greatly. He is the only person out of all the people whom I’ve ever met at the Club who SELF-parks. He also drives a very simple car and has a simple phone. You know what that means? That means he’s very confident and has a high level of self-actualization: he doesn’t need “things” to make him feel good. That was a very cool discovery!

From a Victim to a Winner! A true story…

Just last week I met Maria at The Business Hall of Fame hosted by GA State University. She was introduced to me by a mutual friend Rita Izaguirre.

The next day, I received an e-mail from Maria asking me to tell my story for her blog. That was interesting. I sure am always open to share, so I said yes :-)

Last Friday, on the 11th, Maria came to my home and recorded my entire story – huge work she’s done. After that, she edited the video, added some pictures she found after researching my city of Kursk where I’m from, and did some other great things.

She put it all together very well, and sent me the link to the final story.

If interested, you can read it here:

http://www.mariaschnabel.com/blog/2012/05/13/russian-bride-finds-sorrow-then-happiness-online/

Many thanks to Maria for taking the time and investing so much energy and effort into creating a story that she felt would be of benefit to many people. Great job!

How To Stay Cool And Calm Under Pressure

Whenever someone gets on your nerves, follow these steps I’ve developed:

Ask yourself “Do I want to spend my valuable time, energy and effort getting upset and pissed off? Would it be more beneficial FOR ME to stay calm and focused? ” If staying calm seems to be more beneficial, then stay calm and simply let the situation go. It’s that easy. Your time and energy are VALUABLE.

Whoever acts inappropriately or even stupidly simply does not deserve that incredible value.

Can you imagine a place where 1400 professionals get together to network, try different food samples from all around the world and meet like-minded people? There IS such place! The name of it is Global Connect! 40+ Chambers of Commerce were present there! There was so much fun and so many amazing people! There was delicious food and nice music! There were cameras, of course, and lots of networking to do! :-)

I personally talked to about 55 people and got 50 business cards in my purse :-) Some of the people I met were actually people whom I had been trying to reach for a while!

Homeless, Hopeless, and Helpless

I have already shared with you a story about how in 2009 I, escaping from a domestic violence situation, was forced to go and live in a shelter for battered women. What I didn’t tell you is that that very shelter’s staff kicked me out of there in 2 months after I came. Why? They said they truly believed that I was dating my ex-husband whom, at that time, FYI I had two court-battles with……….. Not only did I not have any documents, but I did not have anybody in America to reach out for help to. The biggest issue though was the fact that I could not speak English.

I was homeless, hopeless, and helpless... And they kicked me out just like that… Of course, you now know that I never dated my ex-husband, but I went out there and rebuilt my life from scratch.

So, why am I telling you this tonight, 5/3/12? It’s 10:58 pm as I am writing it now… I just can’t let it go. My heart is aching so much tonight!!!! Why? Well, here it is.

I presented the World Chamber of Commerce tonight at the Global Connect II in Atlanta. I personally talked to over 50 people and exchanged some business ideas with those who I thought may become my partners on some projects at some point. It was a fun and a very unique event. I loved it!………… Here comes a gentleman to me, shakes my hand and asked me about what I do and the WCC. We talk and he shares with me about his business. I smile and listen – I love learning about new people and what they do! ….and here he says “.. and I am also the president of the XYZ which is an organization that helps women from all over the world to survive domestic violence. We have a safe-house… blah blah blah”…. I must tell you as soon as I heard the XYZ name, my mind went blank, my heart started bleedingI could physically feel the pain from that day when the XYZ shelter’s staff kicked me out knowing that I was homeless, hopeless, and helpless…. I came very close to him, looked him in the eye, and asked him if he knew that his staff was kicking out women when those had no help. He said “No”. I said “I am the one”. He looked at me like he didn’t understand what I was talking about. I told him that my story is going to be on Channel 2 WSB TV this Sunday at 6:30 am and he can watch it or listen to it. He seemed to believe that I was mixing things up and didn’t really understand what a great place he was talking about – the XYZ shelter. At that point, I couldn’t talk anymore and I started crying……. I told him that I waited for this moment for years – to meet those staff’s boss and explain how wrongly they acted toward me that day... So many years have passed, but I still remember my case worker’s face and everything she said and how she said it…. This was the scene that appeared in my mind as soon as he said “the XYZ shelter”….

I left the Global Connect almost immediately and cried at the parking garage for some time before I was able to put my brain back together and drive home. I am just very surprised that this man came to shake my hand this evening.… The world is small. But I am even more surprised how fresh those memories are in my mind and my heart, and how much it still hurts……….
